OUR COMMUNITIES - Wemindji

Wemindji, Eeyou Istchee, James Bay, tourism, Northern Quebec

The Many Faces of Our Community Keep Traditions Alive In Today's World

Wemindji comes from the Cree word for the "Paint Hills," or "Ochre Mountains" that provide the colourful backdrop for our community. In the half-century since we moved from our original home on an island in Old Factory Bay, to the present site, we have grown into an energetic and dynamic community of around 1,200. While our traditions remain strong, we are also at the forefront of economic development in our region, boasting everything from our own source of energy using a "mini-hydro" dam on the Maquatua River, to the region's main Internet provider, CreeNet.

But enough about us. What do you want from your James Bay experience? Are you looking for a place of natural beauty? Our lands and waters, from the rugged islands and coast of James Bay to our impressive rivers and lakes, are unsurpassed. Wildlife? From the amazing spring and fall migrations of waterfowl on James Bay to beluga whales, seals, caribou and even polar bears; a powerful sight to behold!

Great fishing? There's trophy northern pike, walleye, and lake trout in nearby lakes, and rivers. Canoeing or kayaking? Winter travel and camping? We offer it all. If you're interested in our culture and history, there are feasts, an annual music festival, and a week of traditional activities at the site of our old community in Old Factory River.

Whatever you would like to do on your northern adventure, we can make it happen. We can provide you with expert guides, food and other supplies and access to snowmobiles or freighter canoes. At the end of your active day relax and dine at the local Inn and restaurant and then consider a leisurely walk to the top of one of the nearby hills where, or so we like to believe, the sun sets in an ochre hue!
