Eastmain : Eastmain Cultural Village
Getting to know a place means more than just seeing its lakes, forests and villages. It means getting to know the people, who have lived in harmony with this environment for thousands of years, as well as observing and participating in their cultural traditions. You can do all that and more at Eastmain's cultural village. This is no mere artefact of the past, but a vibrant centre for cultural exchange where visitors are invited to experience first hand the craftsmanship, food, dance, music, and ceremonies that have been a central part of our identity for many, many generations.
You can savour traditional dishes, and learn the hunting, fishing, and cooking secrets of the elders. You can observe the craft of the trappers and tanners, and even learn how to make your own trap. And you can follow the trail into history with a canoe excursion on the legendary Eastmain River, a primary artery for the fur traders three centuries ago. Or board a boat for a trip across to one of the area's original settlements on Cape Hope Island, and to Old Factory Island, the birthplace of our ancestors and the gathering place for the summer's highlight, a week-long celebration. Many remarkable examples of Cree artistry are on display, from dreamcatchers to beaded garments and jewellery; and the beauty and intricacy of our Arts and Crafts may inspire you to try your hand at creating your own, and we'll gladly show you how.
The cultural village is open from May 1st to September 30th.
