Cultural Events
Sit by a fire on a bed of spruce boughs as elders tell stories that have been passed down for generations, savour our food, discover our land, share our culture. And most importantly, bring back one-of-a-kind memories that will last a lifetime.
A visit to Eeyou Istchee offers you an exciting opportunity to come to know a culture that has been attached to the lands and waters of this magnificent place for thousands of years. We hold the natural world in the highest of reverence, and have always sought to live in sustainable balance with our surroundings. Here, you'll find a window into the ancient world through our festivals, ceremonies and stories. But the present and future also thrive here as reflected in the evolving character of our modern communities.
We continue to honour our timeless traditions and venerate our connection to this land through annual pow-wows in June and July. Walking-out ceremonies are also an important traditional celebration. Celebrations such as the "Chiiwetaau," "Bhaadhaagoosh'shoon," and "Mamoweedow Minstukch," feature music, song, dance, crafts and rituals. These events sometimes involve processions by canoe to sites of historical significance and we invite you to come along to experience for yourself the power of these places and rites we observe.
